John was part of an interdisciplinary team working on a project funded by NIH/NSF to investigate microbial contamination of shallow groundwater in Bangladesh. John'sresponsibilities included laboratory and field investigations, studying colloid transport behavior, and applying hydrogeology, numerical modeling, remote sensing, and GIS. The results of their research led to the publication of a new model for explaining long-distance transport of fecal bacteria.
Before Columbia University, John spent a significant portion of their career at NASA's Johnson Space Center. Starting in 1996, they worked as an Aerospace Engineer, managing space flight hardware related to environmental health onboard the International Space Station and Space Shuttle. John also served as Deputy Manager of the Lunar Dust Management Project and as a Project Engineer for the Space Station Waste and Hygiene Compartment. One of their notable accomplishments was designing a solid waste management system for the BIO-Plex facility, a self-contained closed loop system intended to sustain astronauts on the surface of Mars for extended periods of time.
In addition, John briefly worked as a Research Associate at NASA Johnson Space Center in 1998, although specific details about this role are not provided.
John Feighery has a solid education background in engineering and environmental studies. John completed their Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering at The University of Texas at El Paso from 1994 to 1999. John then pursued further education at Columbia University, where they obtained their Master of Science in Earth and Environmental Engineering from 2005 to 2007. John Feighery continued their studies at Columbia University and earned their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Earth and Environmental Engineering from 2007 to 2013.
