William Schaefer serves as the Deputy Chief Safety Officer for the Commercial Crew Program at NASA, where they are responsible for ensuring the implementation of Safety and Mission Assurance functions. Previously, they held multiple roles at NASA from 2001 to 2013, including Chief Safety Officer for the Commercial Low Earth Orbit Development Program and Chairman of the International Space Station Safety Review Panel. Before their tenure at NASA, William worked as an Aerospace Engineer for Barrios Technology, LTD, contributing to various mission operations projects. William holds a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin and an A.S. in Mathematics from Austin Community College.
