Alex Helman, PhD, currently serves as Senior Program Officer at The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, directing activities for the Board on Health Sciences Policy since September 2018. Previously, Alex held positions as Associate Program Officer and Program Officer within the same organization, and was a PhD Candidate at the University of Kentucky from July 2013 to September 2018. Alex also contributed as a Mirzayan Science and Technology Policy Fellow with the Committee on Women in Science, Engineering, and Medicine and completed a temporary role as Associate Program Officer for the Board on Higher Education and Workforce. An undergraduate research experience was gained at Elon University, focusing on the oxidative effects of Congo Red dye on amyloid-beta aggregates, along with additional research as an NSF REU Fellow at North Dakota State University. Alex's educational background includes a PhD in Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry from the University of Kentucky and a BS in Biochemistry with minors in Neuroscience and Non-violent Studies from Elon University.
