Amy L. Smith has a diverse work experience in various industries and positions. Amy L. started their career in 1998 as the Executive Director of the Alaska Family Resource Center. Amy L. then worked as the Central Region Manager for the Division of Public Assistance at the State of Alaska from 2002 to 2004. In 2006, they became the Director of Policy for the State of Indiana. From 2008 to 2010, they worked as a Policy Associate for Workforce Education & Economic Development at the State of Washington. Amy then held multiple roles at the Washington Employment Security Department, including Deputy Assistant Commissioner and Director of Policy, Program Administration, and Technical Assistance. Amy L. also served as the Director of Employment System Administration & Policy at the Employment Security Department. In 2014, Amy joined the National Association of State Workforce Agencies as an Assistant Director/Project Manager and later became the Director of Learning. Alongside their professional career, Amy has also been involved in various equestrian organizations such as the Great Falls All Breeds Horse Club and the Montana Hunter Jumper Association. Amy L. currently serves on the board of directors for these organizations. In 2018, they took on the role of Chief Executive Officer at Spirit Wind Thoroughbreds, an Off Track Thoroughbred Rescue organization.

Amy L. Smith has a diverse education history. Amy L. attended the University of North Dakota from 1987 to 1991 and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice. Following this, they pursued a Masters of Arts in Counseling at the University of North Dakota from 1992 to 1994. In 2000, Amy attended the University of Alaska Anchorage for two years, focusing on Accounting. Lastly, in 2005 to 2006, they studied Business Administration at Indiana University-Purdue University at Columbus.
