Derek Holthaus

Director of Innovation and Solutions at National Flavors

Derek Holthaus has worked in various roles since 2011. In 2011, they were a Teaching Assistant at the University of Maryland and an Intern at Fusion UV Systems Inc. In 2012, they were a Graduate Research Assistant at the Brookhaven National Laboratory/University of Maryland. From 2014 to 2021, they were employed at TIC Gums, where they held the roles of Sr. Principal Scientist, Sr. Scientist, Innovations, Scientist, and Food Technologist. In 2021, they became the Director of Innovation and Solutions at FlavorSum. Throughout their career, Holthaus has been responsible for developing methods to determine molecular weight, size, shape, and other properties of biopolymers, leading projects to improve raw material sourcing and quality, proposing process changes to improve quality and consistency of products, and innovating new products/processes.

Derek Holthaus completed a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the University of Maryland between 2008 and 2012. Derek then transferred 21 credits to the University of Saint Joseph, where they completed a Master of Science (MS) in Chemistry between 2015 and 2017.
