L. Alex Kahl

International Fisheries Manager at NOAA

L. Alex Kahl is an experienced professional in international fisheries management and policy with a strong background in oceanography and environmental science. Currently serving as the International Fisheries Manager at NOAA since November 2017, Kahl collaborates with international partners to oversee fisheries management in the Pacific islands, representing the United States in negotiations related to regional security and economics. Prior experience includes roles at the U.S. Department of State, where Kahl led a team in the Operations Center, provided briefings for senior officials, and advised on Middle East energy policies and international energy security. Kahl also worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Rutgers University, leading Antarctic research focused on climate change impacts on marine ecosystems. Kahl holds a Ph.D. in Oceanography from Rutgers University and bachelor’s degrees in Hydrology and Water Resources Science and Geography from UC Santa Barbara.
