Matthew Montaño

Associate Director, Information Resources (Chief Information Officer) at National Park Service

Matthew Montaño is the current Associate Director of Information Resources (Chief Information Officer) at the National Park Service. Matthew has held this position since January of 2022. Prior to their current role, they served as the Director of IT Modernization and Innovation at Centers of Excellence from October 2018 until January 2022. In this role, they led large-scale modernization and digital transformation programs across the federal government in partnership with agency executive leaders. Matthew also introduced modern problem-solving methods, including agile and human-centered design, to establish a culture of continuous improvement.

From October 2015 to September 2018, Montaño served as the Chief Information Officer at the National Eye Institute (NEI). In this role, they were responsible for leading the NEI’s information technology team and overseeing all IT operations. Matthew also managed the NEI’s budget for information technology and developed strategies for improving the institute’s IT infrastructure.

Prior to their time at the NEI, Montaño served as the Chief Information Officer at Palo Alto Health Care System from October 2011 to September 2015. In this role, they were responsible for leading the health care system’s information technology team and overseeing all IT operations. Matthew also managed the health care system’s budget for information technology and developed strategies for improving the system’s IT infrastructure.

Matthew Montaño earned a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from Texas Christian University. Matthew then pursued a Master of Arts in Artificial Intelligence from Georgetown University Graduate School of Arts & Sciences (GSAS). While at Georgetown, they also completed graduate coursework in computer engineering at Regis University. After completing their studies at Georgetown, they obtained certification in user experience design from Cornell University Graduate School. Additionally, they hold certifications from Scaled Agile, Inc. in Leading SAFe (SAFe Agilist) and from ITIL Certified in ITIL Service Design (ITIL-SD). Finally, they have a certification from Purdue University in Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt.
