Dr Joanne Nightingale

Dr Joanne Nightingale has extensive work experience in the field of environmental science and climate change. Dr Joanne has worked as a Principal Scientist at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) since 2023. Prior to that, they served as a Freelance fitness instructor at Les Mills International since 2012. Dr Joanne also worked as the Chief Advisor Climate at WWF-UK from 2022 to 2023.

Dr Nightingale had a significant role as the Chief Scientific Officer at CSX Carbon from 2021 to 2022, where they facilitated a trusted carbon market and delivered trusted carbon measurement and audit.

From 2013 to 2021, they held the position of Principal Research Scientist in Earth Observation and Climate at the National Physical Laboratory. In this role, they successfully managed and delivered various pan-European projects and provided leadership in developing frameworks for auditing environmental data.

Dr Nightingale also had two secondments at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) in 2016 and 2018. In these positions, they provided leadership on science and technical issues related to climate policy and developed a business case for a technical assistance programme for Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV).

Dr Joanne has also worked at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center as a Senior Support Scientist from 2008 to 2013. In this role, they coordinated NASA's earth observation satellite land product validation program and led international collaboration activities.

Dr Nightingale began their career as a Post Doctoral Research Fellow at the University of Maryland and Oregon State University, where they conducted research on forest science and modelling growing season photosynthesis and forest productivity.

Overall, Dr Joanne Nightingale has a diverse and extensive background in scientific research, environmental data analysis, and climate policy leadership.

Dr Joanne Nightingale completed their education at The University of Queensland. From 2001 to 2004, they pursued a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Geography and Remote Sensing. Dr Joanne also holds an additional certification in MSP® Managing Successful Programmes 5th Edition from The Knowledge Academy, obtained in 2022.
