National Power Corporation was founded on November 3, 1936. Since the passage of Electric Power Reform Act of 2001 (EPIRA) which restructured the electric power industry into generation, transmission, distribution and supply sectors to encourage private investments, NPC’s mandate has been focused on the following: (1) perform missionary electrification in areas that are not connected to the main grids through the Small Power Utilities Group (SPUG); (2) manage and rehabilitate watersheds and dams necessary for the safe and reliable operation of hydroelectric power plants; (3) operate and maintain undisposed generating assets, including Agus-Pulangi Hydro Complexes, and; (4) accelerate the exploration and development of renewable energy (RE) resources to achieve energy self-reliance and champion its entry in SPUG areas.
