Dr. Alford is a Distinguished Service Professor at Baylor College of Medicine in the Bobby R. Alford Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery. He is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. Dr. Alford has received NASA’s Distinguished Public Service Medal, the AIAA Jeffries Aerospace Medicine and Life Sciences Research Award, and the NSBRI Pioneer Award for his dedicated service and leadership to the NSBRI and its partnership with NASA. He has served on many space-related councils, including NASA’s National Advisory Council, the select White House “Blue Ribbon” Advisory Committee for the Redesign of the Space Station, and the Task Force on the Scientific Uses of the Space Station. Since 2007, he has co-chaired four annual International Space Medicine Summits.
