Stewart Hickey has a diverse work experience spanning various industries and roles. Stewart began their career as a Design Evaluation Engineer at Analog Devices in 2003. Stewart then pursued their doctoral research at the University of Limerick from 2005 to 2009. Following that, they worked as a Research Project Manager, leading the University of Limerick's research activities on a European FP 7 project focused on industrial symbiosis and sustainable resource management. During their time there, they also served as a Contract Lecturer, teaching various modules related to sustainability and engineering. In 2014, they joined Rehab Group as a Regional Operations Manager, overseeing the operations of the Enterprises Division. Currently, they are the Head of Business Excellence at the National Standards Authority of Ireland, a role they have held since 2019.

In June 2015, they obtained the "Waste Management and Resource Minimization" certification from the same institution. Furthermore, they have a "National Certificate in Exercise and Fitness (Qualified Fitness Instructor)" from the University of Limerick, but the specific date of acquisition is unknown.
