Angela Smith, PharmD, DHA, MHA, BCPS, FACHE has a diverse work experience in the pharmacy and healthcare industry. Angela began their career at Duke University Medical Center as a Clinical Staff Pharmacist from May 1998 to July 1999. Angela then joined WakeMed as a Supervisor of Clinical Pharmacy Services in 1999 and held this role until 2007. In 2007, they briefly served as the Director of Pharmacy at Holly Hill Hospital Careers. From 2008 to 2015, Angela worked at WakeMed as the Manager of Clinical Pharmacy Services. In 2015, they joined the NC Department of Health and Human Services, first as Chief Pharmacy Officer and Director of Pharmacy, and later as the Director of Pharmacy & Ancillary Services. Angela also has experience in academia, as they became an Adjunct Professor at Duke University School of Nursing in August 2019.
Angela Smith has a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which they obtained between 1992 and 1998. Angela also has a Doctor of Healthcare Administration (DHA) degree from the Medical University of South Carolina, completed from 2014 to 2017. In addition, they hold a Master of Health Care Administration (MHA) degree with a focus in Health/Health Care Administration/Management from Pfeiffer University, earned from 2012 to 2014. Angela Smith is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE) since 2019 and became Board Certified in Pharmacotherapy Specialist (BCPS) in 2011.

The Department of Health and Human Services manages the delivery of health- and human-related services for all North Carolinians, especially our most vulnerable citizens – children, elderly, disabled and low-income families. The Department works closely with health care professionals, community leaders and advocacy groups; local, state and federal entities; and many other stakeholders to make this happen. The Department is divided into 30 divisions and offices. NCDHHS divisions and offices fall under four broad service areas - health, human services, administrative, and support functions. NCDHHS also oversees 14 facilities: developmental centers, neuro-medical treatment centers, psychiatric hospitals, alcohol and drug abuse treatment centers, and two residential programs for children.
