Earlier in their career, Nick pursued their PhD in Neuroscience at the University of Virginia from 2005 to 2011. Their research focused on intrinsic and synaptic hyperexcitability in hippocampal neurons in temporal lobe epilepsy. Nick utilized techniques such as whole-cell patch clamp electrophysiology, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, and qPCR.

In 2004, Nick worked as a Post-Baccalaureate Fellow at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), where they conducted research on the purification of proteins, affinity purification of antibodies, and PCR cloning of Drosophila genes for expression.
