Matin Bek is a fellow with New America's International Security program. He has held many senior positions in Afghan governments including Chief of Staff of the Afghan President (July-August 2021) and as a member of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan Peace Negotiating team (2020-2021). He served as Director General of the Independent Directorate of Local Governance (IDLG) of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan (2017-2020).
Before that, Mr. Bek had served as the Deputy Director of the National Directorate of Intelligence (NDS) for Provincial Affairs for nearly three years (2015 2017). Mr. Bek held several important positions with the Government of Afghanistan including Deputy Minister of IDLG for Administrative and Financial Affairs, and several other advisory positions. He was the youngest cabinet member of the National Unity Government and was also a member of the National Security Council. Mr. Bek earned his Masters in Political Science from Jawaharlal Nehru University and his Bachelors in Political Science from Delhi University.
He is currently doing his second masters in the Security Studies Program at Walsh School of Foreign Services, Georgetown University.
