Derrick R. Miller joins the New Hanover County Board of Elections for his second term. Derrick grew up in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. In 2008, after graduating from the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, majoring in German at Davidson College, earning his Ph.D. in German literature from UNC-Chapel Hill, and teaching at Duke University, he relocated to Wilmington. Currently, he teaches German at UNC Wilmington, chairs the Department of World Languages and Cultures, and serves as a UNCW elected delegate to the UNC Faculty Assembly. Derrick is a member of St. James Episcopal Church, and is actively involved with a number of community organizations, including serving as treasurer of Stonewall Sports Wilmington, and has adopted and fostered dogs from Carolina Basset Hound Rescue. And, as a local activist, Derrick has advocated for the North Carolina State Constitution’s guarantee of free elections.
