James McCain has a diverse work experience that spans various industries. James started their career in 2005 as a Saxophonist in the US Army. After leaving the army in 2008, they worked as a Saxophonist and Woodwind Instructor for an unspecified company until 2011. James then joined the Bloomingdale School of Music as the Director of Student Services from 2011 to 2016. In 2017, they moved to the League of American Orchestras, where they held the positions of Manager and later Director of the Knowledge Center until 2023. Currently, James is working as a Financial Analyst at New York Public Radio, a role they started in March 2023.

James McCain's education history begins with a Certificate in Arts Administration from NYU School of Professional Studies, which was completed in 2014. Prior to that, they pursued a Bachelor of Music in Saxophone at The Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University, which they completed in 2004. Afterwards, they pursued a Master of Music in Saxophone at the University of Michigan and completed it in 2005.
