Lead Adviser, Legal Division at New Zealand Foreign Affairs & Trade

Charlotte Skerten currently serves as the Lead Adviser in the Legal Division at the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade, a position held since July 2022. Prior experience includes serving as a Senior Legal Adviser and as a Diplomat at the New Zealand Mission to the UN and WTO from January 2019 to December 2021. Charlotte’s career in the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade also encompasses roles as a Legal Adviser and Foreign Policy Officer from January 2015 to December 2018. Additionally, Charlotte worked as a Solicitor and Law Clerk at Bell Gully between March 2012 and December 2014, and gained international experience as a Visiting Lawyer at Slaughter and May in 2013. Academic qualifications include a Master of Laws (LLM) with Honors from Columbia University (2017-2018) and a combined LLB (Hons) and BA from the University of Otago (2007-2011). Charlotte has also contributed to legal education as a Law Tutor at the University of Otago and served as a Summer Law Clerk at Bell Gully.
