Dr. John Vial

Project Execution Lead at Nexxis

Dr. John Vial has a diverse range of work experience in various industries. Dr. John started their career as a Graduate Engineer at ANSTO in 2008 and later pursued a PhD at the University of Sydney. Dr. John then worked as a Researcher at NICTA, where they focused on applied machine learning research, including Bayesian groundwater modeling and demand modeling. After that, Dr. Vial joined CSIRO as a Pre Sales Technical Support specialist, matching research interests with the needs of business customers. Dr. John also worked as a Researcher, exploring solutions for finding patterns in Australian banking data.

In 2017, Dr. Vial joined Upright Media Inc. as the Chief Scientist, contributing to the development of ad-technology for repurposing video assets on emerging platforms. Dr. John then became the Founder of Perth Machine Learning Group, a company they managed from 2017 to 2023.

From 2018 to 2019, Dr. Vial was the VP Robotics at Project 412, leading efforts to bring automotive autonomy to the mining industry. Dr. John then joined Fortescue Metals Group as the Superintendent AI & Machine Learning, where they built teams and delivered world-class AI solutions. Dr. John also served as the Autonomy Technical Lead, evaluating technology for autonomous systems and guiding engineering teams.

In 2023, Dr. Vial joined Nexxis as the Project Execution Lead, overseeing a small robotics team and managing the development of a spider-inspired robot for non-destructive testing and inspection.

Throughout their career, Dr. John Vial has demonstrated expertise in project management, technical leadership, AI, machine learning, and robotics.

Dr. John Vial completed their education with a Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical Engineering from the University of Wollongong in 2007. Dr. John then pursued a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Autonomous Robotics at the University of Sydney from 2009 to 2013. Additionally, they obtained a Graduate Certificate in Innovation & Enterprise with a focus on Business Administration and Management from the University of Sydney in 2011 to 2012.
