John Olav Oldertrøen has a wide range of work experience, starting in 1996 as a journalist and project assistant at the University of Oslo. John Olav then worked as a journalist and photo editor at Aftenposten, where they also developed one of Norway's first WAP services. After that, they worked at Schibsted ASA as a journalist and WEB/WAP developer, focusing on the development and production of mobile content services. John Olav later became a journalist and web editor at Bygg og anlegg media AS, where they led the development of their website.

In 2004, John Olav became a communications consultant at Mestergruppen AS, responsible for press releases, web development, and the production of internal and external printed materials. John Olav then served as a web editor at the University of Oslo, followed by a role as a communications advisor at the Norwegian Institute of Wood and Landscape, where they handled research dissemination, photography, layout, and webmaster tasks.

In 2015, they started their freelance career as a manuscript consultant in their own company, OLDERTRØENS SKRIVEHULE. At the same time, they worked as a senior communications officer at the NIBIO Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research. John Olav later became an author, publishing "Isilds Vrede" in 2016 and "Belials Inferno" in 2017.

John Olav Oldertrøen attended the University of Oslo (UiO) from 1990 to 1998. In 1990, they completed their Examen Philosophicum. From 1991 to 1992, they studied Psychology as their major and completed 20 credits towards their degree. In 1993 to 1994, they pursued Sociology and achieved 20 credits. In 1994, they focused on South Asian knowledge and earned 10 credits. From 1995 to 1995, they successfully completed 20 credits in Social Anthropology (grunnfag). In 1995 to 1996, they continued their studies in Social Anthropology and achieved the degree of Cand Mag. Finally, from 1996 to 1998, they pursued Social Anthropology as their major and completed their degree of Stud Polit.
