Steve Altschuler

Steve Altschuler has a diverse work experience spanning several organizations and roles. Steve currently serves as a Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the University of California, San Francisco, a position they have held since August 2014. In addition to their academic role, they also serve as a Scientific Advisor at BAKX Therapeutics since January 2022.

Previously, Steve was a Co-Founder of Nine Square Therapeutics starting from July 2020. Steve also served as a Visiting Professor at Google Brain from January 2019 to March 2020. Prior to that, they held positions at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, including Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacology and the Green Center for Systems Biology from August 2009 to July 2014, and Assistant Professor from August 2005 to July 2009.

Steve also gained experience at Harvard University as a Fellow at the Bauer Center for Genomics Research from August 2001 to July 2005. Prior to that, they worked as the Director of Bioinformatics at Rosetta Inpharmatics from February 2000 to July 2001.

Adding to their impressive work history, Steve spent a significant portion of their career at Microsoft, where they started in February 1994 and held the role of Group Manager and Senior Researcher until January 2000. During this time, they led a multidisciplinary advanced technology team, focusing on developing algorithms and intellectual property in areas such as image analysis, speech recognition, semantic search, and social networking.

Earlier in their career, Steve worked as a Faculty member in the Mathematics Department at Princeton University from August 1993 to February 1994. Steve also served as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study from August 1992 to July 1993.

Steve Altschuler completed their Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics at the University of Pennsylvania from 1983 to 1985. Subsequently, they pursued a Doctor of Philosophy - PhD in Mathematics at the University of California, San Diego from 1985 to 1990.
