Howard Gugel

Vice President Of Regulatory Oversight at North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC)

Howard Gugel has a diverse work experience in the energy industry. Howard started their career at Ameren in 1989 as a Transmission Planning Engineer and later worked as an Energy Marketing Engineer. In 1997, they joined Associated Electric Cooperative as a Principal Planning Engineer and later became a Supervisor of System Operations. Howard then moved to Mirant in 2001 as a Transmission Support Manager before joining Progress Energy in 2002, where they held the positions of Manager of Transmission Planning and Transmission Maintenance Manager. In 2009, Gugel joined North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) and held various roles, including Associate Director of Standards Development, Director of Performance Analysis, and Senior Director of Standards and Education. Howard recently served as the Vice President of Engineering and Standards and is currently the Vice President of Compliance Assurance and Registration at NERC.

Howard Gugel completed their education at the Missouri University of Science and Technology. From 1985 to 1989, they pursued a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. Following this, they pursued a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from 1991 to 1996.

In addition to their formal education, Howard Gugel obtained a certification in the Executive Development Program from Wharton Executive Education in March 2023.
