Melanie Simms currently serves as the Manager of Emergency Response at North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit, a role held since January 2005, where responsibilities include managing responses to public health emergencies such as infectious diseases and environmental hazards. Simms also contributes to community health as a Community Health Promoter on the Healthy Living Program Team, focusing on healthy community development and active living. Additionally, from May 2017, Simms has been involved in academia as a Sessional Instructor and Visiting Professor, teaching Introduction to Applied Research in the Recreation and Leisure Program.
