John C. Hogenbirk, MSc, serves as the Associate Director at the Centre for Rural and Northern Health Research since January 1998, specializing in applied research related to telemedicine, health human resources, and equity of access to health services across various demographics in Canada. Additionally, John holds the position of Senior Researcher at Laurentian University, contributing to the Centre for Rural and Northern Health Research. Since September 2007, John has also been a Family Medicine Research Tutor at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, where guidance is provided to Family Medicine residents on research skills and projects. Hogenbirk earned a Master's of Science in Ecology and a Bachelor's of Science in Ecology from the University of Guelph, completing studies from 1984 to 1987 and 1980 to 1984, respectively.

The Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) is a joint initiative of Lakehead University in Thunder Bay and Laurentian University in Sudbury. NOSM offers a world class four-year MD program. Its unique curriculum has multiple teaching and research sites distributed across Northern Ontario, including large and small communities.
