Yu received her undergraduate degree in chemistry from Nanjing University and a Ph.D. degree in chemistry from Auburn University in the United States. She worked as an associate professor in the Department of Chemistry at Nanjing University, and as a research expert at the University of Michigan. Yu has been engaged in basic research and development and application of sensing materials, nitric oxide controlled-release materials and generation technology for many years, and has achieved international cutting-edge achievements in medical diagnostic testing and new medical equipment. She has applied for 14 patents and 9 patents have been authorized and published in more than 70 papers in mainstream international journals.. In 2006, she was awarded "Outstanding Talents of the New Century by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China", completed three projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China Youth Science Foundation, and participated in main projects of the Fund, major instruments, and 973 projects of the Ministry of Science and Technology.
