Russell J. Howard has a long and varied work experience. Russell J. began their career in 1976 as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research. In 1980, they became a Scientific Fellow with Tenure at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). From 1987 to 1994, they served as Head of Laboratory at DNAX Research Institute of Molecular & Cellular Biology Inc., where they worked on cloning the gene for PfEMP1 of P. falciparum malaria and mammalian cell expression cloning of novel cytokine genes associated with synovial inflammation in arthritis. In 1994, they became President & Scientific Director of AFFYMAX Research Institute, and in 1995 they became President & Scientific Director/Technology Transfer at GSK. In 1997, they became CEO of Maxygen, where they took the company public on NASDAQ and led it as CEO for 12 years, spinning out Codexis and Verdia. From 2009 to 2013, they served as Chairman of the Board & Founder at NovoNutrients. From 2013 to 2015, they served as Chairman and Executive Chairman of NeuClone and from 2015 to present they have been Head of Commercial Strategy at Genome.One P/L.

Russell J. Howard completed a Doctor of Philosophy - PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Melbourne between 1973 and 1975. During 1974, they were a Visiting Researcher at RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau for PhD studies on algal metabolism. Russell J. also holds a Bachelor of Science Honours in Biochemistry from the University of Melbourne, as well as a Bachelor of Science - BS in Biochemistry & Chemistry from the same university.
