Bahia Malas

Bahia Malas has extensive experience in the education sector. They have worked as a Head of Teaching & Learning at the NSW Department of Education since October 2023. Prior to that, they worked as an English Language Teacher at Western Sydney University starting in September 2023.

In 2021, Bahia was a Sessional Lecturer/Academic at The University of Notre Dame Australia, where they prepared and delivered guest Education lectures on innovation in teaching and data-informed practice. They also presented tutorials for English Method students.

Before that, Bahia worked as the Head of English Department at Australian International Academy Strathfield from October 2022 to April 2023.

From 2015 to 2022, Bahia held multiple roles at the NSW Department of Education, including Secondary School English Teacher, Relieving Head Teacher English, Professional Experience Coordinator, Year 7 Student Adviser, ICAS UNSW Coordinator, and 21st Century Learning Team Co-Leader. In these roles, they implemented evidence-based pedagogical practices, facilitated professional development, supported student teachers, and provided guidance on student wellbeing.

Additionally, Bahia has experience as a NAPLAN Marker at Pearson, where they marked the National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy. They also worked as an ITAS Tutor at UNSW, providing tutoring and mentoring services to students from indigenous and Aboriginal backgrounds.

Bahia Malas has a strong educational background with a focus on teaching and educational leadership. From 2016 to 2020, Bahia attended the University of Sydney and obtained a Master of Education (MEd) in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). In 2020, Bahia also completed the National Excellence in School Leadership Initiative (NESLI) Leadership Colloquium Certificate, specializing in Educational Leadership and Administration.

Prior to their master's degree, Bahia pursued a Graduate Certificate in Gifted Education at UNSW from 2015 to 2016. Bahia also holds a Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Education (Secondary) degree from UNSW, which they earned from 2011 to 2014. Their focus during this program was English Literature and Modern History.

Before entering university, Bahia completed their secondary education at Blakehurst High School from 2006 to 2010.

In addition to their formal education, Bahia has obtained several certifications that enhance their skills as an educator. Bahia is a Google Certified Educator at both Level 1 and Level 2, having completed the respective programs in April 2019 and August 2019. Bahia is also a Certified Microsoft Innovative Educator. Furthermore, they hold a Trainer Skills Assessment certification from Google, obtained in September 2023. In terms of certifications related to health and safety, Bahia has an Anaphylaxis e-training Certificate from the Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy.

In November 2017, Bahia was recognized as a Proficient Teacher by the NSW Education Standards Authority.
