Mike McKinnon has a diverse work experience, starting in 1994 as an Executive Officer on the USS WEST VIRGINIA. Mike then served as a Tactical Readiness Evaluation Team member for Commander, Submarine Force Atlantic Fleet, responsible for analyzing and evaluating the wartime readiness of Atlantic Fleet submarines. In 1999, they became the Commanding Officer of USS KENTUCKY, leading all aspects of operations, training, logistics, and personnel. From 2001 to 2003, they served as Deputy Commander for Readiness and Training at Submarine Squadron 20, supervising the combat readiness of five strategic ballistic submarines.
In 2003, they joined Commander, Submarine Group EIGHT as the Assistant Chief of Staff, coordinating submarine operational plans and exercises in the Mediterranean and Eastern Atlantic. Mike then became the Installation Commanding Officer at Naval Submarine Base, Kings Bay, GA in 2004, directing the day-to-day operation and facility management of a $2.5 billion naval complex.
Starting in 2007, they worked as a Program Manager at VT Griffin, managing facility maintenance for the Strategic Weapons Facility, Atlantic. In 2009, they became the Director of Strategy, Plans, and Assessments, coordinating the company's strategic plan at Nuclear Fuel Services. Mike then took on roles as an Operations Section Manager and later as an Operations Director at the same company, responsible for manufacturing operations, maintenance, environmental remediation, and decommissioning activities.
In 2016, McKinnon transitioned to the role of Director of Program Management and Contract Services at Nuclear Fuel Services, leading contract proposals and oversight to meet cost and schedule objectives. Mike also managed the contract department, supply chain, and warehouse operations. In 2020, they briefly served as the Acting Operations Director before assuming their current position as the Operations Director, overseeing all manufacturing and waste water utility operations at Nuclear Fuel Services.
Mike McKinnon has a diverse education history. In 1977, they attended the United States Naval Academy and obtained a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1981. In 2004, they pursued an Executive Certificate in Leadership and Management from the MIT Sloan School of Management, which they completed in 2007. In 2012, Mike completed the Senior Nuclear Plant Manager Course from the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO). In 2013, they participated in the B&W Leadership Development Program, where they gained knowledge in Leadership and Business Acumen, with a focus on finance, strategy, and operations. Additionally, in 2016, they obtained a Certificate in Leading Strategic Growth from the Columbia Business School.
