Stephen Merelman

Criminal justice editor

Stephen Merelman has extensive experience in journalism, holding various editorial and leadership positions across notable publications. Beginning as a reporter for The Alabama Journal and Montgomery Advertiser from 1990 to 1994, Merelman served as Montgomery bureau chief at The Mobile Press-Register from 1994 to 1995. A significant tenure at Bloomberg LP from 2010 to 2016 included roles as states and municipalities editor and team leader for states and cities, overseeing major news events and reporting teams. Merelman's earlier experience also comprises front page editor and state editor at The News & Observer, night city editor at The Birmingham News, and assistant city editor at The Daily Progress. Since March 2022, Merelman has been the criminal justice editor at The New York Times. Merelman holds a BA in English from The University of Texas at Austin.
