Kelly Krag-Arnold has a diverse range of work experience in the education sector. Kelly is currently the Director of the Office of Charter Schools at the Oakland Unified School District, a position they have held since May 2022. Prior to this role, they served as the Deputy Director of the same office from January 2021 to May 2022. From August 2019 to January 2021, they worked as a Policy Specialist in the Office of Charter Schools.
Before joining the Oakland Unified School District, Kelly worked at the NYC Department of Education as an Associate Director of District Planning. In this role, they were responsible for long-term strategic planning for six school districts in Brooklyn. Kelly developed policy recommendations and formal reports for senior leadership and drafted numerous policy proposals, the majority of which were approved by the governing board.
Kelly also gained experience through various fellowships and teaching positions. Kelly worked as an Education Pioneers Visiting Fellow at Education Pioneers in 2018. Kelly also served as a Public Policy Fellow at both Leadership for Educational Equity and the Greater New Orleans Fair Housing Action Center in 2016. In addition, they taught English II at Landry-Walker Career and College Preparatory High School from July 2014 to July 2016 as part of the Teach for America program. Before that, they taught Civics at Lake Area New Tech Early College High School from July 2013 to June 2014, also through Teach for America.
Kelly Krag-Arnold obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations and Anthropology from the University of California, Davis, from 2007 to 2011. In 2011, they participated in a study abroad program at the University of West Indies, Cave Hill, focusing on Women and Gender Studies.
