Britta Baechler, Ph.D. has extensive work experience in the field of environmental science and management, with a particular focus on marine and aquatic ecosystems. Britta is currently employed at the Ocean Conservancy, where they hold the role of Associate Director of Ocean Plastics Research. Prior to this, they worked as the Senior Manager of Ocean Plastics Research at the same organization.
Before joining the Ocean Conservancy, Britta worked as the Research Experience for Undergraduates Program Coordinator at the Portland State University Center for Climate and Aerosol Research. Britta also served as the 2017-2019 Western Division Student Representative for the American Fisheries Society.
Britta has been involved in various research and conservation roles throughout their career. Britta worked as a Graduate Teaching Assistant in the Environmental Science and Management Program at Portland State University and as a Marine Protected Area Coordinator at the CNMI Division of Fish and Wildlife. Britta also gained valuable experience as a National Coral Reef Management Program Fellow at NOAA and as an Assistant Area Management Shellfish Biologist for the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands at the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.
Earlier in their career, Britta held positions as a Fisheries Biologist and Lead Dockside Sampler at the Alaska Department of Fish and Game and as an Experimental Biology Aide in the Native Fish Investigations Project at the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. Britta was also an Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholar at NOAA and worked as a Fisheries Technician for the National Park Service.

Britta Baechler, Ph.D., earned their Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Earth, Environment and Society from Portland State University, where they attended from 2016 to 2020. Prior to that, they completed their Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Biology at Lewis & Clark College, from 2005 to 2009. During their undergraduate studies, Britta Baechler also had the opportunity to study abroad at The School for Field Studies in 2007, focusing on marine ecology in the Turks & Caicos Islands.
