Shachar Tauber

Advisor at Ocular Science

Dr. Shachar Tauber is the Director of Ophthalmology Research, Cornea and Refractive Surgery at Mercy Clinic in Springfield, Mo., where he is responsible for eye care throughout the four-state hospital system. He is also the immediate past chair of ophthalmology and optometry at Mercy Clinic Springfield.

Dr. Tauber, a native of New York City, pursued his medical education at Tulane University School of Medicine (in New Orleans) with a residency at Tulane Ophthalmology, followed by multiple fellowships in refractive surgery and an observational fellowship in cornea and external disease at Harvard University’s Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary.

Before coming to Mercy, he was an assistant professor at Yale University and section chair of cornea and refractive surgery, where he built the Yale-New Haven Eye Laser Center in 1997. Most recently, he developed the Mercy Eye Center Femtosecond Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery Program leading surgeons through a complete rebuild of the system’s eye care delivery and providing this technology to all Mercy patients.

He is active in research in industry-sponsored pharmaceutical and surgical trials, as well as basic research in drug delivery using nanotechnology, and holds multiple patents in drug delivery for the eye. He has also worked extensively with the Department of Defense to develop technologies to address ocular injuries received during combat and he trained staff members at Walter Reed U.S. Army Medical Center on lasers for LASIK and PRK.
