In this role, they were responsible for laying out and fabricating metal structural parts, such as plates, bulkheads, and frames, and braces them in position within hull of ship for riveting or welding. This involved aligning parts in relation to each other, using jacks, turnbuckles, clips, wedges, and mauls, as well as marking the location of holes to be drilled and installing temporary fasteners to hold part in place for welding or riveting. Finally, they installed and maintained ships' piping systems, such as hot water, hydraulic and air pressure, following blueprints. This required cutting and boring holes in bulkheads and decks for installation of pipes, operating shop machines to cut and thread pipe and pipe fittings, such as valves, traps, and thermostats, and bending pipe to specified shape on pipe-bending fixture. Laurence also installed ship machinery, such as auxiliary motors, pumps, ventilating equipment, and steering gear using handtools.
