Mackenzie Steele currently serves as a Deputy State Public Defender at the Colorado State Public Defender since August 2024. Previous experience includes roles as a Law Student Volunteer with Exchange for Change, focusing on legal writing courses in various correctional institutions, and a Legal Intern in the Capital Habeas Unit at the Federal Public Defender, Northern District of Florida. Mackenzie has contributed as Staff Managing Editor and Junior Editor for the University of Miami Race & Social Justice Law Review and participated in pro bono work with the ACLU of Florida. Other internships include positions with the Miami-Dade Public Defender's Office and the University of Miami School of Law Human Rights Clinic. Mackenzie holds a Doctor of Law (JD) from the University of Miami School of Law and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Women's & Gender Studies from West Virginia University.
