James Jenkins has a diverse work experience spanning various sectors. James currently holds the role of Principal, Environment and Climate Change at Ofwat, a non-ministerial government department and economic regulator of the water sector in England and Wales. In this role, James is responsible for leading Ofwat's climate change work and representing the organization to environmental stakeholders.
Prior to joining Ofwat, James worked as a Senior Policy Advisor (Climate Change) at UK Export Finance, the UK's export credit agency. There, they supported the agency's commitment to making financial disclosures in line with climate-related financial disclosure recommendations. Additionally, they conducted project and briefing work focused on clean growth financing and the impact of the UK government's policy on fossil fuel energy sector support.
James also served as the Chair of the Climate Change Network at the UK Regulators' Network (UKRN). In this role, they contributed to the development of UKRN's workstream on climate change and oversaw several projects, including consumer research, COP26 planning, and regulator case studies on climate change.
Before their government and regulatory roles, James had a long-standing career in academia. James held various positions at the University of the West of England and the University of Hertfordshire, including External Examiner and Head of Geography, Environment, & Agriculture. James'sresearch focused on government and business responses to environmental problems, particularly water quality and scarcity.
Additionally, James has been involved in the nonprofit sector as a Board Trustee for FRANK Water, a Safe Water & Sanitation Charity. During their tenure, they helped oversee the strategic management and administration of the organization.
James Jenkins has a wealth of experience in climate change policy, environmental management, and regulatory affairs, making him a valuable asset in their current role at Ofwat.
James Jenkins holds a PhD in Geography from King's College London, an MSc in Environmental Evaluation and Assessment from The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), a BSc (Hons) in Geography from the University of Sussex, and a PGCert in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education from the University of Hertfordshire. Additionally, they have obtained various certifications including an Award in Trade Finance from The Institute of Export & International Trade, a certification in driving business towards the Sustainable Development Goals from Erasmus University Rotterdam, and certifications from the Institute of Water and the Society for the Environment. James Jenkins is also a Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv), a Chartered Member (MCIWEM C.WEM) of the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management, and a Fellow (FHEA) of Advance HE.
