Irina A. Chernikova, PhD, is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Mathematics at The University of Akron, where contributions have included roles as Professor of Technical Mathematics, Lead Faculty, and Department Chair since September 2000. Chernikova focuses on student mentorship and skills development and has been an active participant on the Task Force for the Complete Redesign of the University General Education Program. Additionally, Chernikova serves as an Editorial Board Member for the Journal of Professional Development and represents The University of Akron on the Ohio Transfer Module Committee, ensuring high-quality education programs for transfer students. Previous experience includes serving as a Board Member for the International Institute of Akron, where efforts centered on improving refugee resettlement practices. Chernikova holds a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from Voronezh State University.

The Ohio Department of Higher Education (formerly known as the Ohio Board of Regents) is a Cabinet-level agency for the Governor of the State of Ohio that oversees higher education for the state. The agency’s main responsibilities include authorizing and approving new degree programs, managing state-funded financial aid programs, and developing and advocating policies to maximize higher education’s contributions to the state and its citizens. As a member of the Governor’s Cabinet, the Chancellor of the Ohio Department of Higher Education advises the Governor on higher education policy and implements the Governor’s plan to make college more affordable for Ohioans and drive the state’s economic advancement through its network of public universities, regional campuses, community colleges, and adult workforce and adult education centers. Chancellor John Carey was appointed the ninth Chancellor of the Ohio Board of Regents in April of 2013.
