Chaze Matakala

Chaze Matakala is a seasoned communications manager and writer with extensive experience in cultural documentation and the promotion of African arts. Currently serving as Communications Manager at Gallery 1957 since May 2023, Chaze has also contributed as a writer for New Frame, Mail & Guardian, ArtThrob, Between 10 and 5, and OkayAfrica, focusing on contemporary African artists and cultural affairs. Previous roles include Literary Arts Manager and Senior Lecturer at Open Window, where Chaze developed and lectured curricula rooted in Afrocentric theory. Chaze's background in production consulting at Afronauts Filimu LTD and research at Ku-Atenga Media complements a robust academic foundation, holding a Master of Philosophy in African Studies and dual Bachelor degrees in Heritage and Public Culture, and Film & Media Studies from the University of Cape Town.
