Oliver has a PhD in nuclear physics from Aarhus University, Denmark. For more than a decade, he was a frequent visitor at particle accelerator laboratories such as CERN in Switzerland, performing experiments to advance their understanding of the smallest building blocks of the Universe. Nowadays, however, his interests have shifted to a more applied realm. As the Lead Data Scientist at Open Ocean Robotics, he helps making sense of a wide range of ocean sensor data collected by the company’s unmanned surface vessels, for example, training artificial neural networks to listen for whales in underwater audio recordings.
