Steve Malers is the founder, CEO, and CTO of Open Water Foundation, as well as a former systems engineer and water board member. Steve began their career in 1992 as a software programmer and systems architect for Riverside Technology. There, they worked on software development projects for Colorado's Decision Support Systems (CDSS), including the Colorado River Decision Support System (CRDSS), Rio Grande DSS (RGDSS), South Platte DSS (SPDSS), Instream Flow DSS (ISFDSS), FloodDSS, Basin Needs DSS (BNDSS), Statewide Water Supply Initiative (SWSI), and support of the Colorado River Water Availability Study (CRWAS). The CDSS tools they helped develop have been used in other states, including Georgia, Tennessee, and Nebraska.
In 2011, Steve left Riverside Technology to join the Fort Collins Water Board. Steve served as Chairperson from 2013 to 2015 and Vice Chairperson in 2012. During their time on the board, they worked with staff and other members to address water issues in Fort Collins.
Steve founded Open Water Foundation in 2015 to provide decision support tools and services related to water resources. The organization has since grown to include a team of engineers, programmers, analysts, and communicators who work on water resources data management, analysis, modeling, software development, training, and communication projects in the United States and internationally.
Steve Malers has a BS and MS in Civil Engineering from Colorado State University. Steve has also completed the Water Leaders Program from the Colorado Foundation for Water Education and is certified as a ScrumMaster from the Scrum Alliance. Steve is also certified in the Colorado Water Leaders Program from Water Education Colorado.
