The Mission: Open Waters Network is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to removing the financial and physical barriers that keep under-resourced and underrepresented communities off the water. We believe that cost or ability should never determine who learns, who leads, or who feels a sense of belonging on our local waterways.

Our "Asset-Light" Model:We operate through a lean, partnership-first framework. We do not own boats or maintain facilities. Instead, we function as a strategic funder and catalyst for regional outdoor equity. By partnering with established outfitters, we provide direct scholarships that put participants in existing boats while supporting the local outdoor economy.

What We Do: We address the full "pipeline of impact"—from a first-time paddler to a certified instructor through paddling scholarships, wilderness safety training, and instructor certification to create professional leadership pathways for diverse aspiring instructors. We also partner with public agencies to co-fund ADA-compliant kayak launches, ensuring the river is physically accessible to people of all abilities.

Why It Matters: Outdoor recreation and leadership does not yet reflect the diverse communities found throughout the Hudson River corridor, often due to the high cost of instruction and certification, as well as accesibility. By training a diverse generation of community leaders and instructors, we create a "multiplier effect"—where one trained leader can safely introduce others to the water, creating lifelong stewards of the Hudson River corridor.

Get Involved! We are actively seeking:

Founding Donors & Corporate Sponsors: Help us scale our first-year scholarship impact.

Outfitter Partners: We provide guaranteed revenue while helping your business serve new communities.

Community Collaborators: We want to connect with organizations serving youth, veterans, and therapeutic communities.

Join us in opening the way. The river is for everyone.
