Rick and Bob Avinger, PhD, founded the firm in 1998. Rick began his career practicing law, first as an antitrust litigator and then specializing in executive compensation. Rick is a member of the American Bar Association, North Carolina State Bar and American Association of Justice. For two decades he has been a leading advisor on tax-deferred, incentive compensation strategies. After graduating from Davidson College he received his law degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was a member of the North Carolina Law Review. His articles include “Section 409A – Treasury ‘Newspeak’ Lost in the ‘Briar Patch’,” John Marshall Law Review (Fall 2005), “Closing the Pension Gap – with Hedge Funds,” Pension and Investments Online (March, 2010), and Paying Hedge Fund Managers with Fair Market Value (FMV) Options Increases Pension Returns and Enriches Managers (May 2012) (with Can Civi).
