Nicolas CALO

Scientist at Orion Biotechnology

Nicolas Calo has a diverse work experience in the field of biochemistry and molecular biology. Nicolas started their career as a Master of Science Trainee at the University of Geneva, where they studied IL-33 transcription in macrophages and autophagy molecular mechanisms in amoebas. Nicolas then worked as a Master of Advanced Studies Trainee, focusing on the biochemistry of Staphylococcus aureus virulence factors.

Calo further pursued their research as a Doctoral and Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Geneva. Here, they made significant contributions in the areas of obesity, diabetes, liver metabolic disorders, and cancer. Nicolas discovered a novel hepatic anti-tumor activity of the miR-21 cancer biomarker and identified the IR/IGF1R/PI3K/PTEN signaling pathway's role in steatosis and liver cancer development. Calo also established computational tools and pipelines for data analysis and contributed to complex scientific projects, resulting in multiple high impact publications.

Nicolas continued their research as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Wisconsin–Madison Department of Biochemistry, where they focused on mouse genetics of diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Here, Calo optimized the delivery and characterized the action of a novel small molecule inhibitor of hepatic PCSK9 expression using various in vivo and in vitro models.

Currently, Calo is working as a Scientist at Orion Biotechnology, where they are involved in undisclosed research activities.

Nicolas CALO has an extensive education history in the field of biochemistry. Nicolas started their academic journey at the University of Geneva, where they completed their Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Biochemistry from 2006 to 2009. Nicolas continued their studies at the same university and obtained a Master of Science (MS) degree in Biochemistry from 2009 to 2011. Nicolas pursued further specialization by completing a Master of Advanced Studies in Microbiology from 2011 to 2012 at the University of Geneva. Their academic achievements culminated in him earning a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Biochemistry from the University of Geneva from 2012 to 2017.
