Adam Tyler-Lai has held multiple positions in the biotechnology and diagnostics industry. Adam began their career in 2008 as a Laboratory Demonstrator at the University of Nottingham, where they completed a PhD in Plant Biotechnology. Their project involved genetically modifying wheat to reduce the expression of a Rab GTPase in the developing endosperm. Adam also used bioinformatics to study Rab GTPase sequences in wheat, Arabidopsis, rice and Brachypodium.
In 2012, Adam moved to BioGene Ltd, where they held the roles of Systems Integration Manager and Biomedical Application Specialist. For the latter role, they led the development of an IVD instrument to aid diagnosis and treatment of sepsis, in collaboration with the University of Hull. The point of care instrument used magnetic beads, PCR and microfluidics to detect and identify the causative organism of bacteraemia from infected blood in under an hour. Adam also ran a project to achieve single base-pair resolution in a small capillary electrophoresis chip for forensic applications.
Adam is currently employed at Osler Diagnostics, where they hold the roles of Lead Integration Engineer and Senior Systems Integration Scientist.
Adam Tyler-Lai obtained their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Plant Biotechnology from the University of Nottingham in 2012. Prior to that, they obtained their BSc (Hons) in Biotechnology from the same university in 2007. Before that, they obtained their A level in Physics, Biology, Chemistry, and Maths from Montsaye in 2004. In 2021, they obtained a System Thinking certification from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Certified ScrumMaster® (CSM®) certification from the Scrum Alliance.
