Martin Appelt is a seasoned professional with extensive experience in animal health and emergency management. Currently serving as Senior Director of Animal Health Programs at the Canadian Food Inspection Agency since April 2003, Martin oversees a diverse team responsible for safeguarding Canada's animal resource base from foreign diseases. Martin has also held leadership roles in national preparedness for African Swine Fever and in managing programs that support front-line inspectors. Additionally, Martin is a Lieutenant in the Ottawa Fire Services and has provided veterinary care both as a self-employed veterinarian and within the Austrian veterinary system. Martin holds a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine and a Master’s degree in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna, complemented by business administration education from the Telfer School of Management at the University of Ottawa.
