Matthew Thornley has a diverse work experience, beginning in 2000 as a Process Engineer for John F. Kennedy Medical Center. In 2002, they moved to AIG American General Life Insurance, where they held the roles of Technical Support Representative and Quality Analyst. From 2007 to 2009, they were a Teacher for The Princeton Review, followed by a role as a High School Mathematics Teacher at Robbinsville High School. In 2011, they became a Middle School Mathematics Teacher at Dorchester School District 2, and in 2012 they were an Adjunct Mathematics Instructor and Tutor at Trident Technical College. In 2013, Matthew moved to The Citadel, where they were a Math Lab Coordinator and Adjunct Mathematics Instructor. Matthew is currently an Academic Support Specialist at Outlier.org, a position they have held since 2022.

Matthew Thornley obtained a Bachelor of Arts - BA in Mathematics from The College of New Jersey in 2000. Matthew then went on to pursue a Master's degree in Teaching - Mathematics from The College of New Jersey, which they completed in 2009. In 2021, they obtained certifications from Coursera in Google Data Analytics Specialization, Google Data Analytics Capstone: Complete a Case Study, Data Analysis with R Programming, Analyze Data to Answer Questions, Share Data Through the Art of Visualization, Process Data from Dirty to Clean, Prepare Data for Exploration, Ask Questions to Make Data-Driven Decisions, and Foundations: Data, Data, Everywhere. Additionally, they obtained a Virtual Experience Program Participant certification from Accenture in 2022.
