James Butterworth has worked in a variety of roles in the technology industry since 2017. In that year, they began their PhD studies at the University of Liverpool, where they created a novel technique to increase performance of transfer learning in RL tasks. James was also a Module Demonstrator, Outreach Demonstrator, and a member of the RoboCup team.
In 2019, Butterworth completed a 6-month internship at Jurgen Schmidhuber’s AI startup, NNAISENSE. During this time, they wrote performance-critical Python and C++ machine learning software for use in the robotics industry, and successfully used evolutionary algorithms to solve a non-differentiable geometric optimization problem. James also worked as a Software Engineer at GeDaP (General Data Protected), where they advertised security software developed for IoT devices and sensors.
In 2020, Butterworth became a Principal Investigator at The Alan Turing Institute, where they wrote evolutionary algorithms for the code base leveraging both TensorFlow and PyTorch. Finally, in 2022, they began working as a Cybersecurity AI Engineer at OwlGaze, where they researched, designed, and developed supervised and unsupervised machine learning techniques in C++ for the detection of anomalous system and network events.
James Butterworth attended King David High School from 2004 to 2011. James then went on to University of Liverpool, where they obtained a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Artificial Intelligence from 2013 to 2016. After that, they completed a Master of Research (MRes) in Decision-Making under Risk and Uncertainty from 2016 to 2017. James is currently pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Artificial Intelligence at University of Liverpool, which they are expected to complete in 2022.
