Remote Sensing Science & Carbon Market Policy at Pachama

Carlos Silva has a diverse work experience in various roles and organizations. In 2021, they joined Pachama in a role focused on remote sensing science and carbon market policy. Prior to that, from 2019 to 2021, Carlos worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher in the GEDI Science Team at the University of Maryland. In this role, they were responsible for calibrating and validating forest structure measurements from space. Carlos also worked on projects related to forest carbon sequestration potential and monitoring for government departments.

Before joining the University of Maryland, Carlos worked as a Manager for Forest Carbon Modeling at Bluesource LLC in 2018. Carlos successfully led multiple projects under the protocols of the California Air Resources Board and American Carbon Registry.

Carlos started their career as a Short-term Consultant at the World Bank Group in 2011 and also worked as an Overseas Development Institute Fellow at the Ministry of Planning and Development from 2009 to 2010. In these roles, they contributed to national budget planning and conducted a randomized evaluation of Mozambican primary schools.

In addition, Carlos has had experience as a Short-term Consultant at the State Department of Health in 2008 and as a Technical Program Assistant at Trickle Up (Microfinance) from June to August 2008. Carlos also worked as a Research Analyst at Industrial Economics, Inc. from 2005 to 2007, where they projected costs and benefits for the Fish and Wildlife Service and drafted surveys for the National Park Service.

Prior to that, Carlos had internships at the Paraguayan Foundation for Cooperation and Development in 2004 and the US EPA in 2003.

Overall, Carlos Silva has a strong background in remote sensing science, carbon markets, and forest carbon modeling, with additional experience in research, consulting, and project management.

Carlos Silva began their education in 2000 at Williams College, where they obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Economy and Environmental Studies in 2004. In 2007, they pursued a Master of Public Administration degree in Economics and Public Policy from Princeton University, which they completed in 2009. Subsequently, from 2011 to 2013, Carlos attended the University of Maryland, focusing on Remote Sensing and earning a Master of Arts degree. Lastly, they studied at Brown University from 2013 to 2017, completing a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology.
