Mark Talamini

Dr. Talamini is Chair of the Department of Surgery at Stony Brook University School of Medicine and Founding Director of the Stony Brook Medical Innovation Institute. Previously, Dr. Talamini served as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Surgery at University of California, San Diego. A highly respected surgeon, researcher and teacher, he is recognized as one of the country’s leading authorities on laparoscopic and robotic-assisted surgery. Dr. Talamini specializes in gastrointestinal surgery, with a particular emphasis on the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease and the use of minimally invasive technology. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery as well as the Critical Care Board. Dr. Talamini received his Bachelor’s degree from the Johns Hopkins University and his Medical degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He completed his residency in surgery at Johns Hopkins and his fellowship in surgical nutrition at the University of Cincinnati before returning to the Johns Hopkins Hospital to serve as Chief Resident for the Department of Surgery. Dr. Talamini then joined the faculty at Johns Hopkins, where he later was appointed Director of Minimally Invasive Surgery, a post he held for more than a decade. Dr. Talamini is the Editor of Advanced Therapy in Minimally Invasive Surgery and serves on the editorial boards of 10 surgical journals. He is also Editor-in-Chief of Surgical Endoscopy. He is a former President of the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons and has held key roles with the American College of Surgeons and the Association for Academic Surgery.
