Charles Hartney is Park’s Head of Upper School, where he oversees program and curriculum, faculty evaluation and development, and student support for those grade levels. He also currently serves as the school’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) co-coordinator and has been a member of the Park School community since 2010. Mr. Hartney also served as Park’s Upper School Dean of Students. He was a member of Park’s English department for 10 years, teaching in both Middle and Upper School. In addition to regularly teaching 7th grade English and AP English Literature & Composition, Mr. Hartney has taught elective courses focusing on contemporary Black and African-American literature, feminist literature and thought, philosophy in literature and film, and the connection between writing and self-creation, among others.
Born and raised in Buffalo, Mr. Hartney is a product of both the Ken-Ton public school district and Canisius High School. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in English from Canisius College, a Master’s Degree in English from the University at Buffalo, and is the recipient of an Outstanding Educator Award from the University of Chicago.
