General Eduardo Castanheira Garrido Alves joined the army in 1975 at the Preparatory School for Army Cadets, in Campinas, São Paulo. He holds a bachelor's degree in Military Sciences from the Academia Militar das Agulhas Negras (1978-1981), a specialization in Physical Education from the School of Physical Education of the Rio de Janeiro Army (1989-1990), a Master's in Military Applications from the Escola de Aperfeiçoamento de Oficiais (1991). ), PhD in Military Applications, Planning and Studies from the Army Command and General Staff School (1994-1996) and an MBA in Planning, Budget and Public Management from Fundação Getúlio Vargas (2010).

He was manager of the Food, Materials, Bidding and Financial sectors of the 1st Anti-Aircraft Artillery Group, between 1982 and 1985. In 1986, he managed the Food, Materials, Bidding and Financial sectors of the Regional Depot of Intendence Material of the 1st Military Region . He commanded the 1st Intendency Material Deposit Company of the 1st Military Region, in 1987. He participated in the implementation of Army Aviation by the 1st Army Aviation Battalion and the Army Aviation Base. Between 1992 and 1994, he was an instructor at the Academia Militar das Agulhas Negras. He commanded the 11th Supply Depot from 2006 to 2007. From 2008 to 2011 he was head of the Army Budget Planning and Execution Section in the 6th Army Deputy Chief of Staff. In March 2012, he was promoted to the rank of general and assumed the head of the Brazilian Army's Special Budget and Finance Advisory. In 2015, he assumed the 6th Deputy Chief of Staff of the Army. Since March 2017, he has worked at the Ministry of Defense, which leaves the position of Special Advisor to the Minister of Defense to take over the directorship of the Itaipu Technological Park.
