Matt Smith began their work experience in 1998 as the Owner/Creator of LDSMissions.com, an online directory and interactive guide for LDS Missions and Missionaries. From 2004 to 2011, they worked as a Researcher at the BYU Data Mining Lab. In 2007, they started their PhD in Computer Science/Social Analytics at Brigham Young University, where they developed a computational framework for measuring and reasoning about social capital in online communities. In 2008, they founded the Web Startup Group, a community-driven organization focused on creating new sites and services online. Matt served as the Founder until 2013. Matt then continued their studies at the same university from 2005 to 2007 and earned a Master's degree in Computer Science. Matt Smith further pursued their education at Brigham Young University from 2007 to 2011, where they completed their Ph.D. in Computer Science.

In terms of additional certifications, they obtained a National "E" License in Soccer Coaching from the U.S. Soccer Federation in September 2017. Prior to that, they also obtained a National "F" License in Soccer Coaching from the same institution in June 2017.
